Freeriders Avalanche Awareness Days 2014
For a number of winters now, sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) have teamed up with Snowsport Scotland and Anatom (who support with Backcountry Access Equipment) to bring practical training sessions tailored towards Scottish skiers and snowboarders who are venturing off piste, exploring slopes and gullies, and taking advantage of the good snow cover. After much interest and positive feedback from the courses, we aim to run further Avalanche Awareness days for Freeriders for the 2014 season.
Sunday 26 of January – Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 Cairngorm Mountain.
Sunday 9 of February – Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 Glencoe Mountain Resort.
Sunday 23 of February – Avalanche Awareness for Freeeriders 1 Glenshee Ski Centre.
Date March TBC – Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 Cairngorm Mountain
Avalanche Awareness days for Freeriders aim to develop skills of ; not only what to do in the event of an avalanche, but most importantly, how not to get avalanched in the first place !. The awareness day will cover tips on trip planning and field observations, the essentials of what to carry with you and ,how to use it in the event of an avalanche.
9.30am Meet in cafe at car park. Discuss day plan.
9.45-10.30am Route planning and search techniques. (indoors)
10.30 – 12.30pm Equipment and how to use it (outside)
12.30 - 1.30pm Lunch
1.30 - 3.30pm Exercise in Avalanche site
3.30pm Summary of Day
The course will cost £45. Uplift ticket £TBC Ratio 1:10
The courses will be supported by Anatom, who will provide shovels, transceivers and probes and training help.
The awareness courses will be led by representatives of the SAIS who have extensive experience operating in potential avalanche terrain, leading ski tours, freeriding activities and off piste excursions. They are also Internationally qualified IFMGA Mountain Guides.
